Learn Velebit!

Taught by: Antonio Zarozinski and Marija Blazevic (Croatia), illustration by Nadya L (Russia)

Velebit rises along 145 km along the Adriatic coastline.
It is devided to:

  • the northern area
  • the central area
  • the southern area
  • the southeastern area

In the west is Velebit Channel of the Adriatic Sea. In the the east is the region of Lika - Gacka plateau. That plateau is at 425-600 m above sea level. The mountain is, in air line terms, between 30 km in the north and only 10 km in the south. Velebit is impressive. It looks as a colossal mountain, but it is not very high. Vaganski vrh, its highest peak, is only 1757 m high.

Velebit Landscape

Most of Velebit is part of Lika region. Its northern slopes are covered by forests. You can see the strong contrast to the Kvarner Bay, by the sea where the vegetation has been impoverished because of the influence of strong wind called «bura», and salt. There were forests of oak trees in the past, but they were cut down during centuries.

"Bura" wind is a special story! It is a strong and fierce nort-east wind. It blows from Velebit down to the Adriatic Sea.

The top belt of the mountain with its majestic sculptures and rock formations is the place of most diverse biological habitats.
There are two types of climate in the Nature Park of Velebit:

- The Mediterranean climate at the foot of the mountain along the coast, and
- The Alpine-Dinaric climate in other parts of the Park.

Nature Park Velebit is the area of Croatia where you can find the largest number of indigenous species.

The forests of Velebit are home to a population of animals such as wolf, bear and lynx.

Because of its specific natural circumstances there are many habitats for a large number of Croatian and Velebit endemics and relicts of flora and fauna.

The most precious and our proud is Velebitska Degenija – Degenia Velebitica !
