About our school

Our school "Ivan Goran Kovacic" is the oldest primary school in Slavonski Brod. It is a "mother" of many other schools in Slavonski Brod.
The students are 6 -14 years of age and attend classes from 1 -8.
Many of our parents, grandparents and teachers were the IGK students.
There are 492 kids in 16 classes and 32 teachers.

Last year we got a new gym and two new classrooms and we are very happy for this. Now, the classes from 5 - 8 go to school only in the morning so we have more time for our extra-curricula activities.

Our school building has been under the reconstruction for more than 2 years and we still don't have access to the Internet. It will change very soon. Our teachers have informed us that every classroom will have the computer and Internet connection very soon so we will be able to take part in projects more easily.

We learn many different subjects. In grade 7 we have Croatian language, English language, Music, Art, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Technical Education, Physical and Health Education. ICT is optional but more than 80% of students are included.

Religion is also optional subject.

We publish the school paper called «Little Goran» once a year.

Our school was named after Ivan Goran Kovacic who was a Croatian poet.
He was born in Lukovdol on  21st March 1913. In 1942 he joined to Partisans and fought against the fascists. He was killed in 1943.
Goran wrote many wonderful poems. The most important and most famous is "The Pit", a dramatic protest against all wars and war crimes.

Every year, on the first day of Spring, we celebrate the School Day.
Our school has won a number of national and international awards.
