From very old times people wanted to go to space. Many writers wrote books about space exploration.

1924 The first organization of space flying study was formed in Moscow .
1927 The first exhibition of space apparatus design was organized in Moscow .
1954 Soviet scientists made proposals and counts for sending sputnik.
1957 First successful orbital launch was a Soviet unmanned spacecraft Sputnik. This spurred the race to space.
1958 The first sputnik for researches was sent.
1958 Explorer 1, the first satellite in orbit, lifts off Cape Canaveral .
1959 N.A.S.A. was founded.
1960 Mercury Freedom 7 carries Alan B. Shepard Jr. into orbital flight
1961 Russian cosmonaut Juriy Gagarin was the first man to fly to space.
1961 Mercury Friendship 7 lifts off John H. Gleen
1962 US Ranger 7 sent close ranged photos of the moon and impacted it
1963 John Glenn becomes first American to orbit earth
1967 Apollo 1 ended tragically
Oct.1968 Apollo 7 broadcasted live for first time
1968 First manned voyage around moon. Frank Bormand, James A. Lovell Jr., and William A. Anders. Apollo 8 was the first successful lunar orbited to carry men into space.
1969 Apollo 9 flies around earth
1970 Apollo 13 mission is aborted after an explosion!
1972 Apollo 17 is the last moon mission
1982 First commercial space shuttle takes place on mission sts-7
1983 Sally Ride became first woman is space. Guion Bluford became first African American in space on June 18, 1983
1984

Bruce McCandless became the first human satellite in the manned maneuvering unit (mmu) on sts 41. Sts -41 g Kathryn Sullivan becomes the 1 st US woman to make a spacewalk in October 1984

1985 Shuttle flights resume with the launch of discovery-sts-26
1986 Challenger explodes in 73 seconds after liftoff on sts-511 killing its crew of seven
1992 Replacement space shuttle endeavour blasts off on its main voyage sts-49
1993 Discovery (sts-61) astronauts carry out a daring repair mission to correct the flawed vision of the hubble space telescope
1994 Discovery launches on sts-60 carrying Sargent Kricklev the first Russian cosmomaunt to fly on a US space craft.
1995 Atlantis makes the first of nine space shuttle dockings with Mir
1996 Shannon Lucid flies the longest mission at that time on Atlantis sts-76 and sts-79
1998

Construction of the iss begins with the Russian module launch Zarya

2003 Columbia breaks up in atmosphere where returning after a 16 day mission on sts(107) crew of 7 lost
