Natural disasters are happening more often and are having a greater impact on the world in terms of both their human and economic costs.  While the number of lives lost from natural disasters has declined in the past 20 years, the number of people affected has risen.  According to the UN's Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery, 75 percent of the world's population live in areas that have been affected at least once by either an earthquake, a tropical cyclone, flooding or drought, between 1980 and 2000.

What can Generation Y do to preserve our natural resources and reduce the effects of global warming?

A Great Idea
On March 31, Sydney Australia was plunged into darkness to raise awareness about global warming.  The event, called Earth Hour, was created to make a big statement about climate change.  The organizers wanted to encourage Australians to conserve energy and to think carefully about what they can do to cut pollution.  Australia is one of the world's largest per capita producers of carbon dioxide and other gases that many scientist believe are contributing to global warming.
