Music Piracy
by Chris J  (WM)
Everyone has done it before. Some feel kind of bad about it while others see it as a better way for them to get back at the man. Where ever you stand your reasons are your own, however the continued piracy of copy righted material has the music industry a little more than aggravated. So mad in fact that the big four Universal, Time-Warner, EMI, and Sony have launched a campaign of lawsuits against free music distributors like KaZa, Bear Share, Napster and other similar free file sharing services. They see it as a threat to their continued profit and that of the artist’s.Obatined from www.Flickr.com When in truth most artists only get a minimal percent of the record sales. Most if not all of an artist’s income is received from concert ticket sales. In order to combat the growing number pirating enterprises the Big Four along with many other record companies have asked for congress to pass legislation making the download of pirated music the same as stealing the CD right from store.

Will this bill pass? Who can tell? Either way its not costing the United States government any of its yearly income so I would be completely surprised if Congress passed this legislation. Politicians would only focus on this piece of legislation if there was a chance for glory from it or a chance to increase their popularity with those they are representing. This is due to the fact that its only small proportion of the United States population that even cares whether or not music is pirated, but what they do care about is that they can listen to it.
