Generation Y Challenges Obesity
by Ammar  (WM)
A person is classified as Obese if their body mass index is 30 or higher. Obesity is an underestimated health issue that is causing problems for many people worldwide. Obesity can lead to serious health consequences. Risk of these consequences increase as BMI (Body mass index) increases. Body-mass index can be found with the formula: Mass (kg) divided by the square of your height in meters. Generation Y needs to pay more attention to obesity and try to come up with easy prevention.

In 2005, 1.6 million adults (over 15 years old) were overweight, and at least 400 million were obese. The World Health Organization predicts that by the year 2015, approximately 2.3 billion will be overweight and over 700 million will be obese. A person who is overweight has a BMI of 23-29. A person with a BMI of 30 and over is obese. With this trend in increasing obesity, Generation Y will have to work out a way to get people on a healthy diet and exercise plan.

Healthy eating is the key to weight loss and maintenance. The diet should consist of foods low in saturated fat in small portions, along with the increase in whole grains, legumes (pods), fruits & vegetables, and nuts. Another important part of the diet that is never stressed is that meals should be plentiful and spread evenly throughout the day. This will keep your metabolism high, which in turn will burn fat. Even though healthy eating is only half of the solution to obesity, Generation Y can be a lot healthier with the right diet.

When consuming too many calories from the food we eat, we can have too much energy stored in our bodies. This energy will be stored and turned into fat. The best way to avoid the fat is to use the energy in the form of physical exercise. Physical exercise not only burns the extra energy, but makes the brain function better socially. With enough exercise, and a proper diet, you can control your weight.

Obesity can lead to many major health problems. Cardiovascular disease, which consists of heart disease and stroke, is the world’s number on cause of death. Diabetes is a globally growing epidemic that is predicted to grow fifty percent in the next ten years. Musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis and other joint related problems can be caused by obesity. If weight is not controlled, then good health will be sacrificed.

As age increases, metabolism slows down, making weight control even harder. If weight is controlled at a young age, Generation Y can use the advice of doctors and nutritionists to avoid the health concerns caused by obesity.
